Chill's rescue was one that really spoke volumes about how grueling life can be on the street for those we rescue. Randy fed Chill on the streets for months but was not able to rescue her because, at the time, there were other street dogs who were worse off. That wasn't the case for long.
The day Randy and Donna rescued her, they were horrified to see this dog they had known on the streets pulling her body across the ground. Her disfigured body and mutilated foot shocked them. She was no longer able to run and play with the pack of dogs she had befriended. It had become impossible for her to scavenge for food. Randy and Donna had wondered where she had been hiding for the past month... now they knew.
With the utmost urgency, Randy rushed her to the emergency room. Chill was starving and had an awful skin infection on top of everything else. Her flea infestation was the most severe Randy had seen in 20 years, and had given her severe anemia. With life-threatening infections in both legs, Randy braced for the worst case scenario-euthanasia. But like so many we rescue, once they know they are among people who will love and care for them unconditionally, their fighting spirit kicks in and is unrivaled. Thanks to the emergency care she received, she pulled through.
Chill is now in one of the most loving homes imaginable, the home of our fearless leader and founder, Randy Grim. Here's what he has to say!
I will never forget the day I first held Chill in my lap, both of us covered in fleas and being told that she was dying. I remember praying that day. I prayed so hard that she would make it. And she did make it, but that first year was a whole lot of bandage changing, doctor’s appointment, and multiple surgeries. She quickly became daddy’s little girl.
I'm sitting here right now looking at her. Yes, she's a little bit overweight, but I look at her and I see a miracle. This little girl has the biggest zest for life that I have ever seen in a dog. She happily and gratefully howls constantly. Her sound fills the house and makes me smile every time. Her playful spirit is contagious, she loves playing with all my dogs, and she is the go-to dog for the others for companionship. I look at Chill and her deformed legs and it always reminds me how strong the soul can be. And just because you may look a little different, your life can be filled with joy and no pain. It’s a lesson I think we all should take to heart. Yes… she is daddy's little girl.
