Iola's Story, Old and Pregnant

Older, sickly, loving and pregnant describes one of our newest rescues best. Iola has lived her entire life on the streets and according to the neighborhood residents, she has had a litter of pups every year of her existence.

Iola’s rescue wasn’t one of the harder ones, in fact it wasn’t hard at all with her sweet laid back disposition, but this rescue is heartbreaking because of her age and her medical condition. Guessed to be at least 10 years old, she has been diagnosed with Heartworm, Brucellosis and is in labor as I type.  She has just one tooth and eyes that would melt any heart.  Living 10 years on scraps and garbage is no life for any dog.

After her puppies are weaned we will begin the task of fixing her ailments so she can one day live out the rest of her golden years never having to give birth again or suffer from avoidable diseases. She makes me cry.
