Parker Survives

It was a hot sticky late morning. Donna and I just rescued a tattered older pregnant terrier mix from behind a gas station knowing our next stop was to investigate a report of another injured dog.

We traveled from south to north to St. Louis Avenue passing buildings in all stages of decomposition, people sitting on their stoops to try to catch a breeze of relief. We were thankful for the air-conditioning in the jeep.

As we got closer to the scene, we saw MODOT workers pointing towards a gangway in-between two collapsing houses.  Donna and I walked through the rubble trying to locate a dog -  any dog.  It didn’t take long to see the familiar sad eyes of suffering up close, as I have witnessed hundreds of times before.

The small brown dog  wasn’t moving. I realized he couldn’t.  As I moved closer to him, I saw a horrible gapping gash under his muzzle. At least two inches deep and four or five inches long.  Donna noticed swelling on his back leg, which is broken. We had to hurry if we had any chance of saving his life.

Christened “Parker,” he stayed calm and defeated on the ride to our vet trauma center at our Stray Rescue Shelter. Upon arrival, the vet staff was ready and sprang into action. Dr. Sullivan exudes calmness which creates an environment of hope for both the animals and our staff. I kissed Parker, and got a weak tail wag in return!

His physical wounds will heal, and with the help of our amazing staff and volunteers, so will his emotional state.

We can’t do this alone, you can help immediately in his recovery.  You can make a direct impact in Parker’s new life today by giving to the Sydney Strum Animal Abuse Fund.

As a compassionate community, we all can make a difference in Parker’s life and in the lives of dogs like him!

Love and WOOF!

Randy
